Using her extensive knowledge of
classical architecture and old master painting, Gail Boyajian
creates lush, highly literate panoramic landscapes that traverse
time and space. Her romantic narratives suggest porous territories
where mythological and historical figures inhabit a shared supernatural
reality. These complex allegories, where real and fictional dramatis
personae coexist in the natural world aganist a backdrop of fanciful
architecture, forge fresh unexpected associations. Embedded in these
paeans to classical Western culture Boyajian injects references
to topical concerns, such as the presence of invasive species, the
impact of biohazards, and the effects of overdevelopment. Boyajian’s
world view looks to the past and present:
My paintings quote from the Renaissance and the Enlightenment,
periods when the revival of classical culture was at its height,
but they also suggest a kinship with the 19th century American Luminist
painters whose works were inspired by the great ordering principles
of nature and its connection to modern life.
This is Gail Boyajian’s second exhibition at the gallery.
In the summer of 2007 her works will be featured in a solo show
at the New Britain Museum of American Art.
