Fascination with scientific systems
of observation and analysis continue to be the driving force of
Linda Darling's painting. The diverse subjects of her new
works- night skies, exotic plants and interiors- are described in
overlapping circular patterns derived from a figure in geometry
called an Apollonian gasket. Her drawing method results in images
that appear pixillated, and occupy a territory somewhere between
abstraction and representation. the solid and metaphysical. This
is manifest in a series of nocturnal views showing streams of vehicular
traffic below and orbiting stars above, recorded with the aid of
time lapse photography. Darling’s habit of deconstructing
her subject into multiple units has become her means of indulging
in a vividly intense hyper reality rendered with the cool meticulous
attention to detail which has distinguished her painting. |

| Also on view is an installation of new works by
Hannah Burr. Composed of sheets of cut paper, bound together
by threads, ribbons and yarn the artist creates beguiling artifacts
of serendipitous charm and humor. Burr characteristically executes
an arrangement of elements dictated by processes that recreate actions
within a specific time and place. “In these studies I explore
how three variables: stacked cards, wrapped twine-like artifacts
and the number of times these are wrapped. interact and relate to
one another as a functioning whole. This project follows two site-specific
installations in which marks within an environment serve as landmarks
for certain activities taking place over time. The wrapped material
comes directly from these project events, and these studies examine
potential correspondences for new manifestations.” |
