Jill Slosburg-Ackerman

Yellow Lesson, 2002-2004
Wood, Plexiglas, found object,
80 x 26 x 21 inches

Jill Slosburg-Ackerman creates hybrid works which combine carved forms with prosaic found materials and discarded furniture. By employing both aesthetic and functional  elements the artist questions issues of site and context  and expands our definition of what constitutes an art object.  In the same fashion, her works on paper are a playful collision of biomorphic abstract ink drawings with meticulously carved wood relief elements.  She describes her objective "as the exploration of unsettled relationships: nature in contrast to artifice, the crafted object versus the manufactured product, and the tension between sculpture and function." Her sculptural practice has been informed and inspired by her interest in material culture  and the example of Constantin Brancusi who radicalized the pedestal by coupling seemingly disparate materials and formal styles within the same work.
