Acrylic on canvas, 48 x 60 inches
| | Linda Darling continues to explore the relationship between the processes of biological science and those of art in a series of works illuminating the pathways taken by various life forms in the phenomena of natural selection. In her recent paintings of male birds assuming the elaborate coloration and plumage of their mating display, Darling demonstrates both her mastery of empirical observation while also illustrating the importance of visual appearance in the sweepstakes of reproductive competition. Networks of interlacing fractal circles which cover the surface of Darling's images provide a visual analogue to the repetitive life cycles of her avian characters and capture by formal means the infinite variety and endless obsessive generative impulse of all animal life. |
